I’d like to nominate Preston Mill as an heirloom for very personal reasons. It was a favourite spot of my late father in law, John Watson MA who was billeted in East Linton during the early years of the 1939-45 War. He left Art Teaching to join the RAF in 1939. He became a photographer based at RAF East Fortune and Drem, working in Photo processing and Photo Interpretation. He took many photos in East Lothian during the War, a few in colour and while off duty would meet his sweetheart at Preston Mill, Where he painted lots of accomplished watercolours of the Mill, some of which we still have. Later in the War he was posted to RAF Medmenham, on the Thames, where he helped locate many V1 and V2 sites enabling these sites to be destroyed. Each time I visit Preston Mill I remember him and all those who enjoyed some moments of peace there despite the many horrors of war that these bases suffered. Dozens of aircrew were killed on training missions in the East Lothian and one of John’s tasks was to photograph both the crash sites and the graves of the young men who lost their lives. It still is a wonderful spot and one that I will always remember and hope that future generations can also find peace there.
