Br Robert Schieler FSC, Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers

    Italy | 1 Nov 2017

IN REMEMBERANCE OF BROTHER JAMES KIMPTON I will be forever grateful for my one meeting with Brother James. While I had heard his name throughout my years as a Brother, my only encounter with him was as Superior General. It was during my pastoral visit to India in July 2016 that we finally met. While he was suffering in body, his mind was sharp and his spirit inspiring. Many are familiar with his missionary spirit and the innovative new ministries he established for the poor and the vulnerable. We recall his early years in Sri Lanka and his involvement as one of the pioneers of St Pius X Boys’ Town, Madurai, in the early sixties. Later, in the 1970's he was associated with the establishment of St Joseph’s Boys’ Village 70 km north west of Madurai. Of course, he will long be remembered for Reaching the Unreached. This multi-purpose ministry is a great grace for the forgotten poor on the margins of society. It is a model worth emulating elsewhere. Personally, I am most grateful for his outreach to poor girls. Sadly, we all know of the tragic treatment of girls and women in our world today. We thank God for Brother James's vision and commitment to the education of girls in various fields such as doctors, nurses, teachers, government officials and engineers. Another aspect of Brother James's vision and life as a Brother was his promotion of our shared mission with the laity. Our Institute today is blessed with the many women and men, religious sisters and priests who share the Lasallian mission and charism. Brother James embodied in his person those two foundational pillars of Lasallian Spirituality, the spirit of faith and the spirit of zeal. His zeal for the poor was informed and strengthened by his faith in the active presence of God in the ordinary affairs of humanity. He lived what our Rule says: The Brothers live out their faith as a gift received for the ministry of Christian education. By faith, they contemplate God who has chosen them as workers to bring his salvation to the very poor and lowly.... “Ministers of God and of the Church,” anxious “to touch hearts,” the Brothers carry out their mission with the “ardent zeal” which the Lord’s work requires. Urged on by this zeal, and with the attitude of Jesus Christ the servant, they generously put their time, their talents, their energy, and their sufferings at the service of those God entrusts to them. (Rule 20, 21) Our lives have been enriched by Brother James's presence among us. He was a friend and a Brother to all, especially to those "abandoned by the side of the road". Now he "shines as a star for all eternity" amid all those whose lives and hearts he touched. Brother Robert Schieler, FSC Superior General, Fratelli delle Scuole Christiane, Rome
