Celebration by: Leonie Runcie

Date added: 8 Oct 2012

It seems very strange indeed, that Evelyn is no longer with us.. She is the much-missed sister of Leonie.

Evelyn Aspin (nee Laslett) passed away in St. James's University Hospital ("Jimmy's") in Leeds, Yorkshire, on 14th August 2012, after a brief illness - pancreatic and liver cancer - diagnosed only 7 days before her death(!)

She grew up in her close and loving family in Fish Hoek, near Cape Town, South Africa and adored swimming at the beach there. She went to schools in Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. In 1972, Evelyn decided to follow her sister to the UK, where she met and married her husband Robert. They latterly lived in Knaresbough, Yorkshire, for some years. During 2005, she became the mayoress there, when her husband was elected mayor. She really enjoyed attending all the functions required of that office.

At her funeral, a poem 'Torn Splinters' was read from the book 'Only a Teardrop Away from a Cry', by Lynette Dowling (nee van Huysten) - a close Fish Hoek friend, till Lynette died in 1999.

Evelyn is survived by her married sister Leonie, who also now lives in the UK and also her brother Robert and his family, who live in George and Johannesburg, South Africa.
