Burt Prelutsky was born on 5 January 1940 in Chicago but raised in Los Angeles. He has been a professional writer since the age of 19. In 1967 he was writing for the Los Angeles Times and had a regular feature column in their weekly magazine ‘West’.
They dispatched him to travel as a passenger on the last cruise of the RMS Queen Mary and his account was published in a special section (pages 14-72) of the 10 December issue.

He would later develop his career as a television screenwriter, starting with eight episodes of ‘Dragnet 1967’ produced in 1968/69. He made his name writing eight episodes of M*A*S*H in 1975-77.
These were followed by several award-winning movies and he has written for McMillan & Wife, Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, Rhoda, Family Ties, Dr Quinn and Diagnosis: Murder. Burt has free-lanced for the New York Times, TV Guide, Holiday, Modern Maturity, EMMY and Sports Illustrated.
