Pte Matthew NEELY is one of the 372 British Servicemen who died on active service during the four-year Cyprus Emergency April 1 1955 to April 18 1959, and whose name is among those remembered with honour on the British Cyprus Memorial. Serving with the Highland Light Infantry, he was killed instantly on Tuesday afternoon, October 23 1956, when a bomb was electronically exploded as he was playing in a company football match in Lefkoniko. Aged 19, from Glasgow, he is buried at Wayne’s Keep, the British military cemetery in Cyprus, Plot 14 Row B Grave 12. Two others from the Regiment were victims of the same bomb.
