Remembrance by: The British Cyprus Memorial Trust

Date added: 6 Dec 2010

DRIVER WILLIAM JAMES WITT, serving in Cyprus with the RASC and stationed at Stavos, was shot dead in an incident in the mountains near Paphos on August 25 1956. Aged 20, and briefly buried in Wayne’s Keep, his body was flown home, to lie beside his mother in Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, London.

Unfortunately, due to an administrative error, his file was mislaid and it was not until his niece Linda Green made enquiries about her uncle at the end of 2009 that his omission from the Armed Forces Memorial was discovered — his name has now been added to the Roll Call. If any reader, or any veteran who served with him, has any memories of Driver Witt it would be appreciated if they could add comment, and/or email his niece —
