Remembrance by: The British Cyprus Memorial Trust

Date added: 9 Jul 2009

Sgt Ernest John ALLEN is one of the 372 British Servicemen who died on active service during the four-year Cyprus Emergency April 1 1955 to April 18 1959, and whose name is among those remembered with honour on the British Cyprus Memorial. Serving with 73rd Squadron RAF, a 28-year-old Regular from Clare, Suffolk, he was murdered on the evening of Tuesday July 17 1956. Invited as guest to a Greek-Cypriot house he walked instead into a trap. Three masked gunmen were waiting for him, intending to take him hostage for an EOKA man facing the death penalty for the murder of RAF Cpl HALE three months earlier. But the unarmed sergeant put up such a fight they shot him dead. His killers were never caught. He is buried at Wayne’s Keep, the British military cemetery in Cyprus, Plot 21 Row C Grave 4.
