Remembrance by: The British Cyprus Memorial Trust

Date added: 9 Jul 2009

Pte William Albert GRAY is one of the 372 British Servicemen who died on active service during the four-year Cyprus Emergency April 1 1955 to April 18 1959, and whose name is among those remembered with honour on the British Cyprus Memorial. Serving with the Gordon Highlanders, he was one of 13 of his regiment who were killed — along with seven other British soldiers — during an anti-terrorist operation, ‘Lucky Alphonse’, on June 17 1956 when they were trapped in a fierce fire in a heavily-wooded area of the Troodos Mountains set ablaze by a mortar bomb explosion in the tinder-dry forest. Aged 20, from Birmingham, Pte Gray is buried at Wayne’s Keep, the British military cemetery in Cyprus, Plot 21 Row B Grave 11.
