    R Ethan Jean-Marie

    London, United Kingdom | 2 May 2017

I was born and raised in Saint Lucia, but moved to London seven years ago as a teenager to live, work and study. I fancied an exciting career that would allow me to travel the world. I kept coming across RAF TV and radio adverts, and remembered my maternal great-grandfather who served as an RAF pilot during World War II, this fostered my interest in the RAF. I submitted an application just after finishing my Computer Science master’s degree at King's College London in September 2015. During my time as an RAF Candidate, I decided to join an armed forces related charity to gain some relevant experience for the Personnel Support Officer Role before I enlist. I applied to SSAFA for the caseworker role the next day, had an interview, and officially became a SSAFA volunteer at the East London Division. I fell in love with this role the minute I started. I utilised many soft and technical skills, maintained great friendships with other volunteers, and aided veterans in crisis. I really enjoy being in a position to help other people. I also enjoy the data-entry using SSAFA’s database system known as CMS, other software programs (spreadsheets/word processing) for writing reports, organising events, and the web for research. I have also assisted in fundraising, organising Christmas Concerts and attended occasional volunteer dinners/meetings. SSAFA has laid a basis for my future role as a Personnel Support Officer in the RAF, having gained invaluable experience as a caseworker. I enjoy working with the team and helping veterans in need. It is very rewarding and I would definitely recommend anyone joining this great organisation.

    Cindy Hawes

    FELIXSTOWE, United Kingdom | 3 May 2017

My name is Cindy and I am Divisional Secretary (Div Sec) for Suffolk Coastal. I joined SSAFA in 2016 after watching an advert on TV originally as a caseworker but shortly after completing my course the opportunity to become Div Sec arose. I was in the Army for three years and quite a few members of my family are or have been in the Forces. I find working for SSAFA so incredibly satisfying, helping veterans of all ages and now supporting the caseworkers in my area who are so helpful and friendly. And because we are all volunteers SSAFA works around us, so if you only have a few hours a week to spare SSAFA will accommodate. I would highly recommend to anyone of any age who is thinking of joining to do it, you will enjoy every minute!
