In 2006 I was diagnosed with a neurological condition, a former serviceman myself I knew my future was bleak having attempted suicide. SSAFA offered me a chance to focus on others has a caseworker and to stop worrying about myself. I attended my caseworkers course which was fantastic it was now my chance to say thank you to the British Forces for making me who I am and giving me the chance to meet some of the most fantastic friends I could wish for. Well I have just received my 10 year award. As a disabled veteran and member of BLESMA and although now fitted with a full leg brace and crutches, SSAFA has allowed me to remain an active member of society despite life’s pitfalls.

I was made aware of SSAFA in 2000, when my husband had left the Royal Navy, having served 24 years. On his discharge he was found to be suffering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer), due to an overexposure incident on a nuclear submarine. He was 40 years old and we had two boys aged six and four, suddenly our lives were in turmoil. We were put in contact with SSAFA, knowing SSAFA was involved and were able to assist us certainly took away a lot of worry at a very dark time in our lives. I'm pleased to say my husband did recover and we will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in June. My father was in the signals, my grandfather was in the Royal Marines and was in the D day landings and my great grandfather was in the Royal Navy and served on the original HMS Ocean. In 2015 I started as a caseworker in Gloucester and was then asked to take on the role of chairman of Bristol & South Gloucestershire. I feel that I am now in a position to give something back and I will continue to do so. I am very privileged and very proud to represent SSAFA on many levels. I have gained a great deal of knowledge and have colleagues who I can call friends. In all honesty I enjoy my work as a volunteer, everyday is different and knowing I have helped someone through a difficult time in their lives certainly leaves a warm feeling.
