Remembered by: Sylvia Garlick

Date added: 21 Sep 2010

John Garlick was an apprentice airman – 49th entry – and trained as an instrument fitter. During his career in the RAF he had various postings including North Luffenham, Oakham, RAF Halton (again) on the teaching/ training side, RAF St Athan and RAF Newton. He left the RAF in 1967 age 40 years. In civilian life he was a quality assurance manager and was a member of the chartered quality institute.

He married Sylvia (Davis) in April 1949 and they were wed for 61 years. During their time in the RAF, they spent 2 years in Egypt (1949 – 1951) this was great even though they were there during the Suez crisis. Later John went on to spend one year in Iraq (about 1958) and then across to Cyprus from there and was caught up in the Eoka trouble (about 1959/60). I do wonder – was it John or just bad luck – he seemed to attract trouble (I have kept any news cuttings I could through these occasions). Anyway we both came out of them all okay and thoroughly enjoyed our life with the RAF.

John was loved by all. He had a great sense of humour. Never changed in anyway in all this time. Everyone took to him on sight. He is, and will be, sadly missed by all for a long, long time.

God bless John – I’ll always love you. The same goes for “the family”. Things will never be the same.
