Remembered by: Terry Hayward

Date added: 19 Jan 2011

Big Jim Gillespie passed away on 27th September 2010 just 9 months after losing his wife, Eileen to a sudden heart attack. He had been unwell in his later months suffering from a severe lung condition.

Jim was an enthusiastic member of Glasgow University Air Squadron and on graduating joined the RAF. He flew Canberras and Nimrods during his postings to Germany, Wales, Cornwall and Scotland.

After retiring Jim and Eileen initially moved back to their beloved Scotland before settling close to their grandchildren in Derbyshire.

Of all his military exploits Jim is probably best remembered for his organisation of Burn's Suppers wherever he was posted. He was an expert on Burns and his recitals of Tam O'Shanter were nothing short of legendary.

A more hospitable and welcoming man it would be hard to imagine and he will be sadly missed by his family.
