He joined the RAF in 1934 and was therefore a pilot and ready for action as soon as the war broke out.. He was in Bomber Command, but sadly his plane was shot down in 1940 and he spent the remaining war in a prisoner of war camp, followed by the "long march" back into Germany when is was obvious that the war was coming to an end...

He had a tough time, but led a relatively happy life afterwards and made it to 99 before passing away peacefully on May 11th.
