Remembered by: Tony Cullen

Date added: 28 Dec 2012

Our friend Jack Riddle was born In London on 13th February 1920 and was subsequently raised by his grandmother in Ashford Kent until old enough to make his own way in the world. He never knew his father.

He had a variety of jobs until 1938 when he signed on for a period of regular service with the Royal Air Force as a trainee radio operator/mechanic. In 1939, together with many others, he commenced active war service in both Europe and North Africa for which he received the relevant awards.

In 1946 he completed his term of engagement with the RAF and after a short period of adjustment was recruited by the RNZAF within his trade skills which now also included radar technology.

After completing a five year term of engagement in New Zealand he joined a UK based company installing navigational equipment in a variety of locations throughout the world. He remained in this role until retirement to New Zealand in 1972.

Jacks recruitment into the RAF was a very significant event for him, both for the comradeship and the skills he acquired during his service. Those skills served him well in his work related later life together with the many long term friendships made hence his wish to recognize this in his bequest to The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

Jack died in Nelson, New Zealand on the 1st July 2012 and I know he would be delighted that his gift will be put to such good use for the benefit of members and ex-members of the Royal Air Force.

Our good friend Jack was an inteligent and generous man who had led a full and interesting life. He would frequently comment that he had no regrets about his life's path and would do it all again if he could.

LAC Jack Riddle – RAF service number 648299 – life member Royal Air Force Association No. 0953/24170 – RNZAF CPL service no. 73264 – born London 13th February 1920 – died Nelson New Zealand 1st July 2012

We honour him and we miss his presence in our lives.

Tony Cullen - Nelson, New Zealand.
