The dictionary definition of a volunteer is “a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.” “A person who works for an organisation without being paid.”
Our volunteers are so much more than this. They are the beating heart of our organisation, without which we would cease to function. Our volunteers can and do make a huge difference to lives of individuals and communities every day.
They come from all walks of life and carry out a number of different roles - from raising awareness of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and fundraising, to working with veterans in the criminal justice system, mentoring and helping beneficiaries manage their finances. We also have volunteers at many of the military bases around the UK and 10 countries overseas supporting those who are currently serving and their families. Casework is at the heart of what we do. It can be difficult, time consuming and complicated, but the feedback from our beneficiaries is that it can be life changing.
I would like to add my thanks for the significant contribution you make to SSAFA and the Armed Forces community.
Sir Andrew Gregory
