    Nana Pratt

    Sierra Leone | 27 Nov 2020

Dr. Nana Pratt National Organization for Women (NOW-SL) Sierra Leone Flag Freetown, Sierra Leone November 2020 Women’s/girls’ leadership and full participation in all sectors driving growth and development and peace processes are very much needed in our country that has been patriarchal since origin. Thank you UN for having heard and acted on the advocacy of, mostly, women around the whole world for equity, equality and women’s full participation in peace processes, and enduring development, that led to UNSCR 1325 - Women, Peace and Security - twenty years ago. With the fundamental tenets of 1325 and bolstered by its sister resolutions, especially 1820, awareness of the imperative for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment across all development sectors, in Sierra Leone, not only at national level, but also in the communities/villages is widening and knowledge is deepening. The Localization Strategy developed by GNWP and popularized in Sierra Leone amongst other countries is enhancing community level understanding and ownership of the imperative of women’s active inclusion and leadership in peacebuilding and across all development sectors; this must incorporate health, education, economic and environmental factors. Sierra Leone’s 2nd generation National Action Plan on UNSCRs 1325 & 1820 (SiLNAP II) depicts this approach. NOW-SL, a GNWP partner implemented an initiative as titled in the accompanying photo, with support from UNDP through the United Nation’s Peacebuilding Fund. The initiative also worked on the linkage between 1325 and UNSCR 2250 - Youth, Peace and Security – 9th December 2015. Participants resolved that they are Ambassadors of Peace, displayed messages reading “I am an Ambassador for Peace”; “I will work in my community to prevent Sexual and Gender Based Violence”. UN family, all in NOW-SL appreciate you.
