My 3 x great grandfather, Ferdinand Moritz Ascherson, ran away from home in Magdeburg at the age of 17, to join the Prussian army under Bluecher. He fought at Waterloo, possibly in a heavy cavalry unit.

I have the pistols he took off a dead French officer at Waterloo, still scarred by having been used as a hammer to shoe his horse. I also have his Prussian medals for the campaign, and as a veteran of the battle.

I should add that he was a Jewish boy. His motives were patriotic enthusiasm for a free and democratic Germany. He became a successful doctor in Berlin, dying sometime in the 1870s.
