In November 1940, Ambrose commenced his War Course at Prestwick.Starting at No 12 EFTS he progressed to 3 SFTS in 1941, graduating in April. His first posting was to 19 OTU at Kinloss flying Whitley 5's. He left in July and was posted to 51 Sqdn squeezing in his first op to Emden. Within a week, he had been seconded to 138 Special Duties Squadron initially based at Newmarket, then transferring to Tempsford. This squadron flew supplies & agents into enemy held territory in France, Holland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark. He was awarded the DFC for his work with 138 Sqdn and was posted to 15 OTU (training) at Harwell on July 3rd 1942. He left in March 1943 and was posted to 83 Pathfinder Sqdn (Lancasters). With Group Captain Searby, he flew many marker missions (including Peenemunde) and was awarded a DSO for a mission over Berlin on 3rd Sept 1943. Leaving 83 Sqdn in Oct 1943 he briefly returned to 15 OTU and then joined the Handling Squadron in May 1944. He flew a variety of single, twin and heavy aircraft and remained with this squadron until the end of the war.
