I came across this poem which I wrote after being very moved by a beautiful war memorial I visited whilst in the Phillipines many years ago. It was written as a Mother to her son and and here it is for you... Where are you my son? The day is done and you have gone Methinks I saw a glimpse as you passed by A familiar turn of the head But no, the face is not the one I know The smile some other women's son Where do I go now my son? My day is done to see your face or find your name On gold upon the stone. The valley lay shrouded in mist and mystery, The only sound that of sheep Calling one to another each call different A tractor's distant cough We put flowers under the yew tree They glow like jewels in the grey silence With heavy heart to church to kneel and pray No coherent thought comes to mind The heart thumps as to choke the very life out of form then, nothing only silence, and the peace Which now I know God can give.
